SEOUL, Oct. 11 (Korea Bizwire) – New technology based on state-of-the-art IoT sensors has been developed to detect risk factors in dedicated bicycle paths for cyclists.
The Korea Institute of Construction Technology (KICT) announced on Tuesday that its Future Smart Construction Research Division’s research team has successfully developed a groundbreaking system that automatically detects and monitors risk factors and their locations in bicycle paths, such as obstacles and road surface damage.
It achieves this by integrating depth cameras and IoT sensors like gyro sensors onto personal mobility devices, including bicycles and electric scooters.
A depth camera is a device that calculates distance information based on the directional deviation of observed objects. Directional deviation refers to the difference in direction observed when viewing an object from two different locations.
This technology has the capability to collect weather and environmental information, such as fine dust density, road surface temperatures, overall temperatures and humidity, as well as atmospheric pressure. The specific type of data collected depends on the type of IoT sensors integrated into personal mobility devices.
The research team has plans to develop a service platform for this technology. Information collected through IoT sensors will be transmitted to this platform, allowing for regular updates to the risk map of bicycle paths.
This advancement would empower road operators and managers, including road management authorities and local police agencies, to efficiently manage roads through the collection and analysis of digitized information. Furthermore, this system can seamlessly integrate with existing platforms such as bicycle path map applications.
