SEOUL, Mar. 7 (Korea Bizwire) – Spoon Radio, the operator of the live personal audio broadcasting platform ‘Spoon,’ announced on March 7 that one of its DJs had made a staggering 1.1 billion won last year, marking the platform’s highest individual earnings to date.
This figure was calculated based on the platform’s virtual currency, with each ‘Spoon’ valued at 150 won.
During the same period, the top ten earners among Spoon DJs collectively brought in 7 billion won, averaging 700 million won per DJ, underscoring the lucrative potential of the platform for its most popular creators.
An analysis of the top 10% of Spoon DJs revealed that their sponsorship earnings last year doubled compared to 2022, highlighting a growing trend of listener support.
Currently, around 60,000 DJs use Spoon, with the top 10% accounting for approximately 6,000 of these broadcasters. Spoon’s platform enables DJs and their fans to interact through audio and text, making it easy for anyone to start a broadcast and generate immediate income through fan support.
Unlike traditional creator revenue platforms, which often require thousands to millions of subscribers and significant views and watch time, Spoon allows DJs to earn from even a small number of fan donations and quickly convert these into cash.
Spoon’s data indicates that DJs typically start monetizing within just two or three days of receiving their first sponsorship, with 30% of DJs generating revenue within a month of starting their broadcast.
In contrast to many creators who invest substantial time and resources into producing video content, Spoon DJs can begin broadcasting with just a smartphone, discussing everyday topics without the need for expensive equipment or personnel.
This accessibility has made the platform particularly appealing to younger generations.
Kim Hyunggun, a business development manager at Spoon Radio, emphasized the platform’s unique position compared to visually-driven platforms, noting that the audio-based nature of Spoon reduces the pressure on creators, allowing for genuine interactions with a small group of listeners and passionate fans to quickly result in monetization.
Launched in March 2016, Spoon has entered its ninth year and achieved its first profitable year in 2022, with an operating profit of 6.4 billion won last year.
Spoon continues to enhance user experience through developments in audio engineering and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into its voice services.
