SEOUL, Jul. 2 (Korea Bizwire) – Seoul Metro, the operator of Seoul’s subway lines 1 through 8, announced on July 1 that it will undertake a consulting project for Jakarta’s urban rail operations.
The project, valued at $9.8 million (13 billion won), is set to run from 2025 to 2028. It is part of a public cooperation initiative organized by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). Seoul Metro will form a consortium with Samsung C&T and Dohwa Engineering to execute the project.
An agreement for this venture is expected to be signed in January next year.
Through this project, Seoul Metro aims to develop a safe and convenient public transit environment in Jakarta and establish a sustainable public transportation system, contributing to improved citizen welfare and resolution of traffic issues.
This marks Seoul Metro’s second urban rail project in Indonesia. From 2020 to April of this year, the company participated in the “Jakarta Light Rail Capacity Building Project,” a railway operations consulting project commissioned by KOICA.
Beyond Indonesia, Seoul Metro is engaged in several international projects. These include pre-opening consulting for Sydney Metro’s Western and Western Sydney Airport lines in Australia, operations and maintenance consulting for Manila’s Metro Rail Transit Line 4 (MRT 4) in the Philippines, and consulting for passenger car procurement for Bangladesh Railway.
In the latter half of this year, Seoul Metro plans to participate in a consulting project for modernizing Bangladesh’s railway signaling system and bid for the construction management of the Manila subway in the Philippines.
Baek Ho, CEO of Seoul Metro, stated, “We will actively share our urban rail operation expertise to help establish a stable urban rail system in Jakarta.” He added, “By securing overseas projects, we plan to showcase the excellence of Seoul’s subway system to the world.”
