SEOUL, Oct. 10 (Korea Bizwire) – Three key South Korean government bodies announced on October 9 that they will initiate a bidding process for a consultancy project aimed at establishing guidelines for a Digital Product Passport (DPP) response platform.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Digital Platform Government Committee, and the Ministry of Science and ICT will oversee the bidding, scheduled to run from October 10 to November 1.

The DPP, a initiative currently being pursued by the European Union, is designed to digitize and disclose to consumers a wide range of supply chain data for products circulating within the EU.

This includes information on raw materials and components, ease of repair, carbon footprint, and recycled content.

The implementation of the DPP has raised concerns about the potential unintended disclosure of critical information, including trade secrets, from South Korean companies to foreign entities.

In response, the government is seeking to develop an industrial supply chain data platform that can both protect companies’ proprietary information and improve their export competitiveness while complying with the new regulations.

The government plans to adopt a data space approach for the DPP response platform. This method, which is gaining attention for its security features, differs from traditional centralized data collection systems.

Instead, it acts as a conduit for data while ensuring the data sovereignty of individual companies and protecting their trade secrets.

“Through the Korean-style data space, we aim to guarantee the data sovereignty of Korean companies while promoting the activation of industrial data, digital and green transformation of industries, and the creation of related new industries,” said a representative from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
