GANGNEUNG, Oct. 30 (Korea Bizwire) – The month-long digital art exhibition illuminating the historic Gangneung Daedohobu complex has concluded with unprecedented success, drawing more than 176,000 visitors to this former Joseon Dynasty administrative center.
The exhibition, which ran from October 5 to 27, transformed the ancient government complex into a canvas for contemporary media art under the theme “Meeting Utopia Through Light.”
The show reimagined the utopian visions of two prominent Joseon-era intellectuals from Gangneung – Yulgok Yi I and Gyosan Heo Gyun – through modern digital technology.
Organized into four thematic sections, the exhibition employed cutting-edge digital techniques including hologram projections, media facades, interactive installations, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality.
The display featured 35 works by 21 artists, including pieces by three local artists who emerged from the center’s media art education program.
“This exhibition has set a new standard for nighttime cultural heritage tourism in Gangneung,” said Kim Hwa-muk, director of the Gangneung Cultural Center, which organized the event.
“We will continue developing content that reinterprets Gangneung’s unique history and culture in contemporary ways to enhance our nighttime tourism offerings.”
The exhibition proved particularly popular with families, thanks to its interactive elements that allowed visitors to become part of the artwork.
Additional services, including guided docent tours, stamp collecting activities, complimentary tea service, and collaborative programs with local cultural groups, received positive feedback from attendees.
The Gangneung Cultural Center noted that the exhibition successfully demonstrated how digital art can breathe new life into historical sites while boosting local tourism.
By combining cultural heritage with digital media art, the event has established itself as a significant nighttime attraction in Gangneung, offering a fresh approach to utilizing historical properties for contemporary cultural engagement.
