SEOUL, July 22 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Display has demonstrated the exceptional durability of its latest foldable OLED panel, featured in the Galaxy Z Fold7, by successfully completing a rigorous 500,000-fold test conducted by global certification agency Bureau Veritas.
In a statement on Tuesday, the company said the panel remained fully functional after being folded and unfolded half a million times over 13 days at room temperature (25°C).
The new benchmark, 2.5 times higher than the previous industry standard of 200,000 folds, highlights Samsung’s growing confidence in the longevity of its foldable technology.
For consumers, the result translates to over 10 years of use for typical users who fold their device 100 times daily, or six years for heavy users folding 200 times a day.
Samsung attributes the enhanced durability to a new shock-resistant structure inspired by the principles of bulletproof glass. The company increased the thickness of its Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) layer by 50% and adopted a new high-resilience adhesive with four times greater recovery capability, improving shock absorption.
The design also includes a flattened structural layout to better disperse external impact, and a titanium support plate—used for the second time in a Galaxy foldable device—to strengthen the panel while maintaining a slim profile.
Lee Ho-jung, EVP and Head of Product Planning at Samsung Display’s Small and Medium Business Division, said the advancements mark a pivotal year for foldable OLEDs. “This new panel reaffirms consumer confidence in foldable durability and underscores our technological lead in the market,” he said.
