DAEJEON, Oct. 14 (Korea Bizwire) – The Korea Forest Service’s Forest Research Institute has announced that through a joint project with the Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology, researchers have developed technology to make a lithium ion battery that can be folded into a paper crane and used three times longer than current batteries.

Professor Lee Sun-young’s team from the Korea Forest Research Institute and professor Lee Sang-young’s team at the Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology developed technology to make a flexible high-capacity paper battery, using nano cellulose extracted from trees.
The researchers have finished issuing their domestic and international patent applications, and the results were published in the prestigious journal ‘Advance Functional Materials’ on October 12.

The joint research team also drew the attention of the world in September 2014 by developing technology to make a battery that bends like paper.

If the technology can be commercialized, expectations are rising that it could lead the lithium ion battery market, which was estimated to be worth 23 trillion won last year, and expected to expand to 64 trillion by 2020.
