SEOUL, March 11 (Korea Bizwire) – China’s drone manufacturer DJI will open its first overseas store in South Korea this weekend, a business move that targets one of the most active markets for contents provided by the aerial device.
The five-story DJI Flagship Store in western Seoul, opened to the press on Friday in an event that combined with the introduction of the company’s most recent product, Phantom 4, will be launched officially on Saturday. The Chinese firm claims 70 percent of the world market for commercial and personal drones.
DJI’s choice of Seoul for the first overseas outreach is seen as an attempt to reinforce its lead in the drone “ecosystem” by tying up with partners in IT-heavy South Korea to produce contents that it can take to the global market.’
“The community of contents providers is growing together with the increase of contents consumption through mobile devices,” Moon Tae-hyun, head of DJI Korea, said at the press event. “South Korea, with its strong IT infrastructure, is the most promising market in this regard.”
The store in Seoul will serve as a showroom for DJI’s key products and provide specialized space to view videography taken by the drones. It will also arrange programs on teaching safe operation of the drones with on-hand practice sessions with professional pilots.
Phantom 4, the latest development by the Shenzhen-based firm, is touted as the world’s first to be equipped with AI elements. It steers itself automatically to avoid impediments and can lock in on an object it is recording. It can also be maneuvered by smartphones, without using control sticks.
The local price of this premium model is 2 million won (US$1,675).
