SEOUL, Korea, April 17, 2014 (Korea Bizwire) – A corporate study said the threshold temperature that determines the “good times” for convenience stores is 19 degrees Celsius.
According to convenience store chain operator 7Eleven on April 16, its sales index begins to rise 100 from the time when the three-day average daily-high temperature surpasses 19 degrees. In contrast, the sales index goes below the benchmark 100 level when there are three consecutive days with the average daily-high temperature below 19 degrees.
According to this classification, the peak time of the year for convenience stores is from mid-April to early November consisting of about 200 days. In 2011, the busy time lasted 210 days between April 14 and November 9, followed by 197 days in 2012 from April 14 to October 28 and 192 days last year from April 16 to October 24.
As for this year’s peak time, the time has been moved up by about 20 days to March 25, giving the convenience store operators longer time to sell more for the year.
Already, 7Eleven reported that its cold beverage sales for three-week period between March 25 and April 15 have increased 74.5 percent from the same period last year. During the same time, the sales of beers have also increased 15.7 percent, including 12.8 percent for domestic beers and 29.5 percent for import ones. The sales of ice cream have risen 36.1 percent as well.
A 7Eleven official said, “Convenience stores sales are very sensitive to temperature and weather conditions. For this reason, we are carefully watching weather forecast for inventory control purposes. As the warm weather came earlier than usual this year, we will make sure to stock up summer items more for our customers.”
