DAEJEON, Nov. 13 (Korea Bizwire) The Korea Water Resources Corp. announced Thursday that it will introduce an artificial intelligence (AI)-based real-time failure detection system by next year to effectively address defects in underground water pipes.

The new system is based on deep learning technology, and is capable of detecting abnormal surges in water levels or pressure by studying data related to water pipes that are operating under normal conditions.

The system can locate the exact location of a defect by synchronizing with a digital geographic information system, the corporation explained.

Extended water pipes consist of large pipelines with a maximum circumference of 2.8 meters to store large amounts of water.

Defects in these pipes can involve leaks of massive amounts of water due to high pressure, which can flood nearby areas and cause inconvenience for local residents or businesses if the water supply is interrupted.

The initial response, therefore, is highly crucial, the corporation explained.

The new system is currently being tested in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province and Jeongeup, North Jeolla Province. It will be introduced to extended water pipes stretching 5,500 kilometers across the country by next year.
