SEOUL, Jul. 19 (Korea Bizwire)The Air Force has deployed a new homegrown radar guidance system to replace existing foreign equipment that was introduced more than 30 years ago, the state arms procurement agency said Friday.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said precision approach radars have been deployed at Air Force fighter wings after assessments of their operational capabilities.

DAPA launched the 20 billion-won (US$14 million) project in 2012 to develop the radar guidance system, which provides data to aircraft approaching the runway, with domestic technology. It jointly developed the radar system with South Korean defense firm LIG Nex1.

“We anticipate the deployment to substantially enhance our military’s management of aircraft operations and controlling capabilities for flight safety,” a DAPA official said.
