SEOUL, Dec. 15 (Korea Bizwire) — The avian influenza (AI) outbreaks have little impact on poultry prices, but the government seeks to expand imports of poultry goods over possible price volatility, officials said Friday.
The assessment came as South Korea has reported a series of AI cases since confirming the first infection on Dec. 3 after an eight-month hiatus.
“South Korea has beefed up quarantine efforts to prevent the spread of AI. As the number of culled poultry is not significant, the outbreak is still having a limited impact on the price and the supply,” the Ministry of Economy and Finance said in a statement.
The ministry, however, said it plans to adopt the tariff-rate quota system to bring 30,000 tons of chicken in the first half of 2024, to cope with possible price volatility.
