DAEJEON, Feb. 19 (Korea Bizwire)Bangladesh, in its recent effort to develop nuclear technology to overcome the country’s lack of natural resources, will be visiting South Korea for technological cooperation.

The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) will be holding a technological assistance workshop at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) from February 18 to 22 to look into the possibility of constructing a multi-purpose nuclear research reactor.

The commission has been conducting research on neutrons and isotopes since 1986. Starting this year, the commission aims to build a research reactor with enhanced productivity.

At the workshop, KAERI will provide analysis on the user requirements of the Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR), introduce variety of small-sized research reactors and nuclear fuel at the institute, and take the team on a tour around the major facilities at the institute.

“South Korea’s HANARO (High Flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor) and Jordan’s JRTR use the same technological model that we aim to build,” said Dr. Imtiaz Kamal, vice president of BAEC.

“We hope that the workshop serves as a new beginning for technological cooperation between the two countries.”

KAERI has been gaining a considerable reputation providing technological support to Vietnam, Kenya, Tanzania, and other developing nations.

“The workshop is the first of its kind since South Korea and Bangladesh signed an agreement for science and technology in 1995,” said Woo Sang-ik, head of the KAERI research reactor development team.

“We hope that our technology at KAERI can help Bangladesh to develop its nuclear industry.”
