SEOUL, May 31 (Korea Bizwire) – Advances in computing technology and dataanalytics tools are expected to help the United Nations achieve its keygoals of reducing poverty and ensuring sustainable development, the head of the U.N. agency’s sub-regional office said Wednesday.

Kilaparti Ramakrishna, head and director of the U.N. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) East and North-East Asia Office, made the remarks during a forum in the western city of Incheon.

The forum, jointly organized by the U.N. office, the Statistical Research Institute and the Statistics Korea, aims to establish a regional platform for sharing and scaling up innovations in big data and analytics to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“In the information age, data is our most valuable currency,” Ramakrishna said in a statement. “We have an opportunity to use the 2.5 quintillion bytes of data that are generated daily to help achieve the SDGs.”

The Asia-Pacific regional platform “emphasizes having the correct data at the right time for policymakers to plan and implement the SDGs, and to monitor and evaluate our progress over time,” Ramakrishna said.

“New approaches and partnerships for technologies are also crucial to ensure we have the ability to capture and analyze the data,” he said.
