GANGNEUNG, June 28 (Korea Bizwire)Birds were found resilient in their old habitat despite a massive wildfire that devastated the area.

A wildfire, which engulfed near Gyeongpo Lake in the northeastern coastal city of Gangneung last April, devastated 121 hectares of forest.

Since then, new plants have gradually covered the devastated area in a course of recovery.

Recently, two five-colored woodpeckers were found atop one of the pine trees, searching for food.

Around five or six tree sparrows were seen huddled near holes in a 20-meter-tall pine tree.

Crows were resting on a burnt branch of a pine tree, while brown-eared bulbuls and Daurian redstarts were flying in and out of the forest.

However, the forest is on the verge of disappearing as the city has started removing dead trees.

The city plans to preserve the trees that can still be revived and focus on expediting the forest’s recovery process.

If the trees are completely wiped out, the birds will be at risk of losing their habitat.
