SEOUL, April 27 (Korea Bizwire) — The supply of low-priced by-product hydrogen will begin in earnest this year for use in transport.
On Monday, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the South Chungcheong provincial government and the Dangjin city government held a completion ceremony for a new hydrogen supply and shipment center for hydrogen vehicles.
At the shipment center, the hydrogen produced by Hyundai Steel Co.’s hydrogen production plant will be stored and loaded onto hydrogen tube trailers.
With the completion of the shipment center, 2,000 tons of hydrogen, enough to run 13,000 hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles on a yearly basis, will be supplied to Seoul and Gyeonggi Province.
The hydrogen supply price will also be reduced by more than 20 percent compared to the existing supply price for hydrogen charging stations.
Hyundai Steel, the country’s No. 2 steelmaker, plans to produce and supply 60,000 tons of by-product hydrogen by 2030 using the by-product gases generated during the steel-making process.
“The supply of low-priced hydrogen will contribute to greatly improving the profitability of hydrogen charging stations, as well as bringing more benefits to owners of hydrogen vehicles.” a ministry official said.
