Sydney, Australia, July 4, 2014 (Korea Bizwire)–Cliftons, the leading provider of training and event venues last night announced Canberra based artist, Penelope Boyd, as the winner of the 2014 Art Prize.
Ms Boyd’s artwork, “The Wait”, was selected as the overall winner of the international Art Prize from amongst more than 725 entries across Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore. Ms Boyd describes her winning painting as “depicting a young girl in a moment of simple domesticity. Subtle tensions, including the subject’s gaze, body language, and the skewed angles, speak of a disruption, providing room for the viewer to explore their own psychological narrative.”
The Art Prize is hosted annually by Cliftons, leading provider of premium meeting, training and event venues in Asia Pacific. Several months ago, Cliftons invited emerging and established artists from across ten cities to submit original artworks into the competition with winners from each city being awarded AUD$2,000 and the overall winner, Penelope Boyd, receiving AUD$10,000. Winners were announced at awards evenings held at each Cliftons location across Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand.
Judges in the 2014 Art Prize were Tim Abdallah, Head of Art at Menzies, Ian Hamlin, President of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, John Batten, Hong Kong based writer, art critic and curator and Denise Mimmocchi, Curator of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Ms Boyd, an artist living and working in Canberra, was ecstatic at the announcement she had won the overall Clifton Art Prize award.
“It’s a huge honour to have won the Cliftons Art Prize this year. As a self-taught artist, and so early in my career, it’s wonderful to have my work validated by such esteemed judges, particularly amongst such a talented group of artists. It makes those long hours in the studio worthwhile,” she said.
Owner and Managing Director at Cliftons, Andrew Cameron, sees the annual Art Prize as a superb platform for emerging artists to showcase their talent.
“It’s always an exciting time of year and this year we’re show casing some extraordinary artworks our venues. Cliftons vision is to provide mentally stimulating environments that enhance the learning experience. We’re thrilled to be able to support young artists and provide a vibrant learning space for our clients. The artworks on display have received a great deal of positive feedback from event attendees and we look forward to many more years of showcasing inspiring new works in our venues,” he said.
Winners in each location can be viewed on the Cliftons Art Prize website www.cliftonsartprize.com as well as images from the awards evenings held on Thursday 3rd July.
