SEOUL, Aug. 1 (Korea Bizwire) — The number of registered electric vehicles (EVs) in South Korea has surpassed 600,000, industry data showed Thursday.
According to the data from the Korea Automobile & Mobility Association (KAMA) and the transport ministry, EV registrations in the country totaled 606,610 units as of June.
The government began to officially record EV-related statistics in 2017. In that year, there were 25,108 registered EVs. The latest tally represents a 24-fold increase from seven years ago.
By manufacturer, Hyundai Motor Co. accounted for 39.8 percent, or 241,691 units, of all EVs, while Kia Corp. came in second at 27.4 percent, or 166,274 units.
Tesla ranked third at 13.3 percent, followed by BMW, Mercedes-Benz and GM Korea at 3.3 percent, 3.1 percent and 2.6 percent, respectively.
The number of EV chargers has also seen constant growth, with cumulative chargers tallied at 361,163 units as of May, according to data.
