DAEGU, Mar. 30 (Korea Bizwire) — Residents of the city of Daegu now have a much healthier lifestyle compared to a decade ago, according to a new survey.

The survey conducted by the Daegu Metropolitan Government revealed the smoking rate among adults in the region fell from 25.5 percent to 20.8 percent over the last 10 years.

Heavy drinkers who consume over seven glasses of alcohol per day also dropped in number by 1.2 percent over the same period. Last year, the high-risk drinking rate in the fourth most populous South Korean city stood at 15.6 percent, below the nation’s average of 18.4 percent.

The number of people who have experienced stress and depression dropped by 4.6 percent and 2.6 percent, respectively.

In the meantime, the majority of Daegu residents now prefer less salty food.

When it comes to dental health, fewer seniors now experience discomfort when chewing food compared to a decade ago, with a slight increase in the number of people brushing their teeth after lunch.

“Though public health has improved, regional gaps between districts and counties have been discovered. We are urged to establish health policy that caters to each region,” a Daegu government official said.

The survey was conducted with a sample of 7,313 adults aged over 19 in a number of districts in Daegu.
