SEJONG, Aug. 25 (Korea Bizwire) — A large-scale data center integration complex is planned to be established in South Jeolla Province to utilize the region’s abundant solar electricity.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said Thursday it had entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the South Jeolla provincial government and the Korea Electric Power Corp. to create a data center park in the southwestern county of Haenam.
Participating in this project are seven companies, including Samsung C&T Corp. and LG CNS Co., with the intention of forming a data center integration complex.
Their objective is to gradually attract 25 data centers, collectively capable of producing 40 megawatts by 2037.
The establishment of the data center integration complex will accelerate after the development of sites and roads by 2027, as well as the procurement of investment for the initial five centers.
By the end of the preceding year, the nation’s solar power facility capacity had reached 20.9 gigawatts. Among this capacity, South Jeolla Province contributed over 40 percent, equivalent to 8.8 gigawatts.
