Dementia Patients to Reach 2.71M by 2050

SEOUL, April 21 (Korea Bizwire) — As Korean society is rapidly aging, it is expected that the number of dementia patients in the country will reach 2.71 million by 2050.

The figure was estimated by the National Assembly Budge Office (NABO) in 2014. According to NABO, the social cost of dementia patients will amount to approximately 4.3 trillion won,or 1.5 percent of Korea’s gross domestic product (GDP).

The Korean government has recently announced that it will open a daycare center dedicated to caring for dementia patients in the second half of this year.

Currently, the Ministry of Health and Welfare has been conducting pilot programs to run a specialized daycare center for dementia patients who require long-term treatment.

As Korean society is rapidly aging, it is expected that the number of dementia patients in the country will reach 2.71 million by 2050.
