Drunk Driving Named as Primary Cause of Indictment of Police Officers: Data

SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Korea Bizwire)About 3 out of 10 police officers who were brought to court after being investigated by prosecutors were indicted for drunk driving, data showed Thursday.

The number of cases where police officers were indicated after going through a prosecutorial investigation totaled 1,141 in the five years from 2018 to 2022, Rep. Chung Woo-taik of the People Power Party said, citing the data compiled by the National Police Agency.

The number of indictments for drunk driving accounted for the largest share at 26.4 percent or 302 cases, followed by traffic law violations and traffic accidents at 177 cases.

When it comes to sexual misconduct, indecent acts by force accounted for the largest share at 44 cases.

The number of cases where police officers were indicted for taking money or bribes stood at 51 and 8, respectively.

The number of cases where the indicted police officers were punished totaled 1,078, while the remaining 63 cases are still pending.

Heavy sanctions including expulsion, dismissal, demotion and suspension of duty occurred in 552 cases, while 37 percent of the expelled police officers or 26 cases were charged for taking money or bribes.
