SEOUL, Jul. 26 (Korea Bizwire) — Gangnam District Office in Seoul has announced plans to build visually impaired friendly streets in the neighborhood using IoT technology.
Stretching over a distance of 1,470 meters, the newly proposed streets in the district will be equipped with an audio guidance system, in a move to create a so-called ‘no obstacle zone’ so that those with visual impairment will be able to walk around without worry.
Sensors will be set up in multiple locations that will work in conjunction with mobile apps to provide audio guidance to the visually impaired with information regarding their surroundings.
“This system will give more information beyond what braille patterns can, allowing a safer walk. The problem of disconnected spots between braille patterns will also be covered,” a Gangnam District official said.
As part of the district’s trial run, five streets will be set up first, including one that connects the Gangnam District Office building and Gangnam-gu Office Station, with over 100 sensors expected to be installed.
With the construction set to be completed by the end of September, district officials hope to begin the first trial run sometime in October.
