SEOUL, Oct. 11 (Korea Bizwire) The government plans to minimize damage from heavy rains using digital twin technology that enables researchers to analyze and forecast expected weather conditions through a simulation of a virtual world.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Monday it will provide the Ministry of Environment with 3D spatial information for a digital twin technology artificial intelligence (AI)-based flood forecasting pilot project, while cooperating to advance the prediction model.

The new model makes use of a real-like river in a virtual space, and then verifies what happens when heavy rain falls. Based on the results of the simulation, it develops and applies preventive measures for the real world.

The Ministry of Environment plans to establish the AI-based flood forecasting system for the Dorim Stream area in Gwanak District, which is vulnerable to flood damage.

Creating an accurate prediction model requires a 3D terrain and building model and information on the sewage network.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to provide a variety of spatial information that it collects and manages, including digital elevation models, orthoimages, 3D building information and data on sewage networks.

A digital elevation model is a data model that represents terrain in 3D, while an orthoimage is a photographic map created using aerial photos.
