SEOUL, Aug. 4 (Korea Bizwire)Hanwha Aerospace Co., an aerospace business unit of South Korean conglomerate Hanwha Group, said Thursday it has completed the development of an energy storage system (ESS) designed for large ships in collaboration with Hanwha Ocean Co., a shipbuilding unit of the group.

The newly developed ESS is based on lithium-ion battery technology and falls under the megawatt-hour (MWh) class, specifically intended for use on liquid natural gas (LNG) carriers and container ships.

By implementing a hybrid power system that integrates an existing internal combustion engine with the ESS for ships, substantial fuel savings can be achieved, along with a reduction in pollutant emissions.

The cutting-edge ESS is also equipped with container-type packaging technology, effectively reducing its overall size by consolidating the control system.

Also, it features automatic fire extinguishing technology, enabling swift detection and suppression of any fires within the ESS.

In light of the increasing demand for ESS due to greenhouse gas emissions regulations, Hanwha Aerospace plans to actively pursue opportunities in the global eco-friendly ship market.

Moreover, the company has strategic plans to acquire core ESS technology that can be applied to its subsidiary Hanwha System Co.’s planned urban air mobility (UAM) business.
