SEOUL, March 22 (Korea Bizwire) — Hyundai Mobis Co., South Korea’s biggest auto parts maker and a key affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group, said it has developed an in-wheel motor by integrating an electric motor into the wheel.
The new in-wheel system is designed to maximize power by integrating a drive motor into each wheel, as well as to enable crab walking and zero-degree turns.
Hyundai Mobis is currently verifying the reliability of its in-wheel motors for mass production based on the all-electric IONIQ 5 with Hyundai Motor Co.
If vehicles are equipped with in-wheel motors, they no longer need to have a separate power transmission component, thus maximizing the drive efficiency and improving the power efficiency.
With the motor inside the wheel, additional space is created that can be used to accommodate a larger battery, thus contributing to extending the vehicle’s range.
The newly-developed four-wheel in-wheel system enables efficient torque distribution in all four directions, improving power efficiency by more than 20 percent.
