SEOUL, Jul. 19 (Korea Bizwire) – Hyundai Mobis, a leading automotive supplier, announced on July 18 that it has developed the world’s first airbags specifically designed for Purpose-Built Vehicles (PBVs), addressing the unique safety challenges presented by these versatile and spacious vehicles.

The company has introduced two innovative airbag designs: a door-mounted curtain airbag and a self-standing passenger airbag, both tailored to the expansive interiors and diverse layouts characteristic of PBVs.

The door-mounted curtain airbag represents a significant departure from conventional designs. Unlike traditional curtain airbags that deploy from top to bottom, this new system inflates upwards. This design consideration accounts for the sliding doors often found in PBVs, which may limit overhead space for standard airbag installation.

The airbag deploys along wires installed on both sides, effectively preventing passengers from being ejected through windows during a collision. It inflates in a mere 0.03 seconds upon impact and has met the stringent ejection mitigation standards set by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Lee Kyusang, head of Hyundai Mobis’ Passenger Safety Research Lab, noted, “PBVs designed for robotaxi services often feature larger side windows to improve openness. We anticipate an increased adoption of passenger safety devices in these vehicles.”

The self-standing passenger airbag addresses the unique front-row structure of PBVs. Unlike conventional vehicles with slanted windshields that support inflated airbags, PBVs often have more upright front glass positioned further from passengers. Hyundai Mobis has developed a design that securely anchors the airbag cushion to the front crash pad, ensuring stability without relying on windshield support.

This self-standing airbag has achieved high safety ratings according to the North American New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) standards.

Hyundai Mobis plans to continue developing a range of airbags tailored to the flexible seating arrangements and passenger orientations common in PBVs, adapting to various interior designs specified by their clients.
