JEJU, Jan. 7 (Korea Bizwire) — Jeju Air will replace all disposable goods provided onboard the aircraft, such as cups and napkins, with eco-friendly ones, starting on January 15.
The eco-friendly paper cups will be made from natural pulp, and will not be coated with chemicals to prevent the cup from getting soaked with liquid.
Eco-friendly napkins will also be non-bleach products that will help reduce carbon emissions during assembly or disposal.
Jeju Air used approximately 8.4 million paper cups onboard last year.
In December, Jeju Air replaced plastic bags used to wrap onboard merchandise with eco-friendly materials which are designed to disintegrate completely within 90 days of disposal.
The airline offers a 1,000 won ($0.90) discount for passengers who use their own mugs or tumblers when purchasing coffee onboard.
In addition, Modurak, the airline’s private cafe for employees, stopped using plastic cups for cold beverages as part of the airline’s initiative to lead the way to protect the environment.
In 2017, the airline launched the Save the Polar Bear project which involved reducing 989 tons of fuel used in flight as of last year, equivalent to 3,353 tons of greenhouse gas.
Jeju Air explained that it amounts to the effect of planting 500,000 30-year old pine trees.
