JEJU, May 20 (Korea Bizwire) — The Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education said Thursday it had launched a school newsletter translation service on a trial basis for multicultural families with students at four elementary schools on the island.
The service is aimed at providing multicultural families with school newsletters written in their native languages to help them overcome the language barrier and to promote smooth communication with schools.
Upon request by the parents of multicultural families, the translated school newsletters can be sent in a text message format through smartphones.
The service also provides a link to allow parents to check the translated version of school newsletters and notices updated at school websites.
For the schools that request automatic translation, the service can automatically translate school newsletters written in Korean into 60 different languages, while creating QR codes or web addresses.
For more accurate translation, the schools also can request manual translation. In such cases, translation goes through the process of proofreading and correction by professional translators.
For several languages such as Chinese, Russian and English, voice support is provided as long as access is made through a QR code or web address.
Based on the results of the trial, the education office plans to expand the coverage of the service across all elementary schools in the second semester of this year.
