SEOGWIPO, South Korea, May 31 (Korea Bizwire) – South Korea’s new naval base on the southern resort island of Jeju is holding an event this week that will allow the general public to see various types of naval ships and equipment in a move aimed at building trust with the local community, the Navy said Tuesday.
During the three-day event named “Navy Week in Jeju” that runs from Tuesday to Thursday, the naval base will display Aegis destroyers, other types of warships, guided missiles, high-speed patrol boats and the Korean Assault Amphibious Vehicle (KAAV), which is used by the country’s Marine Corps.
The base is also offering visitors a rare chance to see and experience naval equipment used by the elite ship salvage unit (SSU) and underwater demolition team (UDT).
Other events include exhibitions for various sea-related photographs and Korean taekwondo martial art demonstrations. Military and navy bands will also perform together along with so-called entertainment troops.
The Navy said the events are being held to increase the importance of security awareness and advances made by the country’s armed forces.
After a long delay, the Korean Navy’s new base on Jeju Island was completed in February this year.
