DAEJEON, May 11 (Korea Bizwire) — The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) said Tuesday it has succeeded in measuring and visualizing the secretion of floral scent on a real-time basis.
The KAIST research team measured floral scent secreting from a lily by measuring the relative reflection rate of volatile organic compounds with a laser interferometer.
The laser interferometer uses the interference characteristics of the laser light source to ensure high-precision length measurement.
The existing floral scent measuring method measured the quantity through qualitative analysis after capturing substances, which made it difficult to identify what cycle floral scents were being secreted.
The newly-developed technology that can observe the cycle of floral scent secretion is expected to be used for studies to find the genes related to the synthesis and secretion of floral scents.
