SEOUL, Oct. 24 (Korea Bizwire) – The Korean Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (KSHRS) announced Monday that it has developed hair transplantation surgery guidelines specific to patients of East Asian heritage, including Koreans.

According to the KSHRS, global guidelines were often based on Western research, suggesting that operating procedures may not be best suited for patients in different ethnic groups.

When a surgical team plans a transplantation surgery, it must take into consideration various factors, including the patient’s head shape, hair, and skin color, which often differ according to one’s ethnicity.

The average East Asian has a flatter hairline with broad, short face shape (brachycephalic) compared to the typical Western individual, said the KSHRS. East Asians also have thicker and darker hair, and often require more delicate surgical methods because of deeper hair roots.

The new guidelines were created to reflect such characteristics, and the KSHRS expects them to help overcome the setbacks faced by surgeons as well as improving the overall effectiveness of hair transplant operations.

The guidelines include adjusting the shape of the hairline, methods for extracting hair follicles and scalp, hair transplantation procedures, and medicinal treatment to improve the effects of the surgery.

The KSHRS also emphasized the risks of operating on East Asian patients, who are more vulnerable to surgical scars and skin pigmentation because of their thicker skin and deeper hair follicles.

“We’ll continue our academic research for more effective transplantation surgeries, to improve the quality of life of hair loss patients,” said KSHRS President Hong Sung-chul.

The full research findings were published in the latest edition of the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery.

Great! Most of the people resist from having a hair transplant just because of the risk of a permanent scar. If the hair transplant surgery undergoes without scar or any harmful side effect, it would surely be the ultimate choice of every person struggling with baldness.

Useful information! As Skin pigmentation is not something too small/ temporary to ignore, I think it would be awesome if the surgery techniques gets so much improved that people face no scar or pigmentation on their body after the transplant.
