SEOUL, Oct. 14 (Korea Bizwire)The Korea Expressway Corp., which manages South Korea’s highways across the nation, said Wednesday that it had expanded the application of the ‘rest-mileage’ system introduced to encourage truck drivers to observe rest hours.

The system was introduced as a way to prevent drowsy driving among truck drivers by providing them with gift coupons if they certify that they took rest at service stations or drowsy shelters along highways.

The state-run expressway corporation, which introduced the rest-mileage system in April for 93 sites on three routes, expanded the range of application to 159 sites on six routes.

Since the system was introduced, more than 5,000 truckers have certified that they took rest for a total in excess of 205,000 times.

On the routes where the system was introduced, the number of casualties caused by drowsy or careless driving of truckers declined by 27 percent.
