SEOUL, June 3 (Korea Bizwire) – Cheil General Hospital revealed Friday that it has signed an agreement with Al Garhoud Private Hospital in Dubai to open a local fertility clinic.

Although the UAE has a long history of cooperation with Korean medical institutions, it’s the first time that the two countries collaborate in the field of obstetrics. It is also the first time for a Korean hospital to export its self-developed fertility technology.

Cheil General Hospital will help install a fertility clinic within Al Garhoud Private Hospital, as well as provide medical and research staff to operate the new center. The Dubai hospital was founded in 2012.

The key technology used to treat infertility is called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which is used to treat patients with hereditary diseases and stop them from being passed on to later generations. PGD is a highly advanced technology that is used in combination with test-tube baby and genetic testing technologies to implant only healthy embryos in the uterus.

Cheil General Hospital is also exporting cryopreservation technology for eggs, embryos and ovarian tissues alike, in an effort to help sick women have healthy babies following treatment.

“It’s an important milestone to introduce Korea’s expertise in fertility treatment to the Middle East and, further, to the world,” said Kim Tae-kyoung, Cheil’s chief of administration. “We plan to expand our cooperation efforts to other female illnesses.”
