SEOUL, Feb. 9 (Korea Bizwire) — The Korean musical “Hero” was performed at Huanqiu Theater, China National Convention Center in Harbin, China on February 7 and 8, according to the Harbin Daily on February 8.
The musical tells the story of independence activist Ahn Jung-geun, who assassinated Ito Hirobumi, the four-time Prime Minister of Japan, and the first Resident-General of Korea during the Japanese occupation, at the Harbin Railway Station on October 26, 1909.
Directed by Yoon Ho-jin, the musical was produced in 2009 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the death of Ahn Joong-geun, who was sentenced to death after the assassination. The acts in China were provided with the original Korean stage props and Chinese subtitles. Two Chinese performers participated in the performances in a bid to illuminate Korea and China’s shared history of fighting against Japanese imperialism.
The local Chinese press said that the musical’s high production values left audiences immersed in the assassination scene that unfolded more than 100 years ago.
