GWANGJU, March 17 (Korea Bizwire) – The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) said Wednesday that its research team had identified the cause of COVID-19 aftereffects using machine learning, a type of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Thus far, it has been reported that COVID-19 causes various aftereffects, including not only respiratory symptoms such as respiratory distress and coughing but also memory loss and chest pain for up to seven months, even after a patient is no longer infected with the virus.
The research team confirmed that the auto-immune response is the main cause behind such aftereffects by using machine learning to compare the proteins of all kinds of coronavirus variants, including the omicron variant, with tens of thousands of human proteins.
“Thus far, auto-immune response has been presented as the cause of COVID-19 aftereffects only in clinical observations. This research, however, identified the correlation between various aftereffects and auto-immune response using machine learning.” said Park Ji-hwan, a professor at GIST.
“This technology can be used not only for the development of medicine for treatment of COVID-19 aftereffects, but also for the development of other virus vaccines in the future.” he added.
