SEOUL, July 27 (Korea Bizwire) — A South Korean YouTuber with around 1.34 million subscribers fell victim to a scam by a local police officer while traveling in India.
FITVELY, a health YouTuber, recently shared on an online community an incident from his trip to India when he got detained by local police for allegedly violating traffic laws while driving.
In the video, the police officer insisted on a fine of 5,000 rupees (US$61), claiming that FITVELY had crossed the yellow line.
However, the YouTuber, whose real name is Moon Seok-gi, had only about 3,000 rupees in cash at the time. Nevertheless, the officer accepted the money and returned 500 rupees.
“After the incident, an Indian friend contacted me and said, ‘You have become famous in India.’ When I checked, I found out that I was featured in various news outlets in India. It turned out that the Indian police officer had scammed me. Some Indian people reported the incident, leading to the suspension of the officer involved,” FITVELY revealed.
“I had no idea it was a scam, and I even shook hands with the officer after he lowered the fine. Looking at the comments, there appears to be a video of the police officer’s family kneeling and apologizing while returning the money. The situation seems to be gaining momentum.”
Meanwhile, Delhi Traffic Police stated on Twitter that they have suspended the officer shown in the video pending an investigation and are now awaiting the investigation’s results.
