SEOUL, Feb. 21 (Korea Bizwire) — With the end of the school year bringing a flurry of graduation and enrollment ceremonies at schools, the soaring price of flowers is a source of frustration among many.
At a wholesale flower market in Seoul’s Seocho District, many customers were seen buying flowers and trying to make bouquets themselves.
“I’m here to buy flowers for my son’s kindergarten graduation,” said Lee Eui-yeon, a 39-year-old housewife. “I already bought the wrapping paper. I will look up how to make bouquets on YouTube and make one for my son.”
Florists also say more customers this year are interested in making bouquets than last year.
The bidding price for a bundle of roses stood at a daily average of 15,195 won (US$11.72) between Feb. 11-17, up 49 percent from last year, according to the data by the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp.
The exorbitant prices are attributed to rising demand for flowers with a resumption of graduation ceremonies in the post-pandemic era and an increase in the cost of heating that raised the cost of flower cultivation.
