SEOUL, Oct. 21 (Korea Bizwire) – LG Chem Ltd.’s polio vaccine manufacturing facility in South Korea has received a certificate of containment from the World Health Organization (WHO), the first such recognition in Asia, the disease control agency said Tuesday.

The facility was among only three in the world to earn the WHO certification, following ones in Belgium and Denmark, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

The WHO certificate is granted to facilities that meet 14 stringent biosafety requirements for safely handling and storing poliovirus.

LG Chem built the facility in 2018 and has supplied polio vaccines to UNICEF since 2021.

The KDCA has supported domestic polio vaccine manufacturers in obtaining WHO certification, as the United Nations agency requires all entities retaining poliovirus materials to complete the process by the end of 2026.

“This certification holds significant meaning as it demonstrates international recognition not only of the safety of production facilities but also of the nation’s biosafety management capabilities,” the KDCA said.
