SEOUL, April 20 (Korea Bizwire) — LG CNS Co., a major IT service provider under LG Group, said Tuesday it had embarked on a project to establish an outdoor smart farm using state-of-the-art unmanned automation for agricultural production.
The project is being promoted jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the South Jeolla provincial government.
Under this project, a data-centric intelligent smart farm will be built on 54.3 hectares of farmland in Naju, South Jeolla Province by next year.
Based on its Cityhub smart city platform, LG CNS plans to develop a “smart farm intelligence platform” for the integrated management of the entire farming process.
The platform will collect a variety of data necessary for farming, such as the growth status of corps, soil conditions, weather, temperature and humidity and pests, while analyzing the data with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to provide optimal farming guidance.
Depending on the size of the farmland, tens of thousands of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and other equipment will be installed to monitor the growth process of crops ranging from sowing to harvesting, and to collect various environmental data.
In the meantime, digital scarecrows will use radar to detect the motion of objects and identify if they are harmful to crops using AI image sensors. Thereafter, they will protect crops by shooting lasers or emitting sounds at frequencies that animals avoid.
