SEOUL, Dec. 4 (Korea Bizwire) — LG Electronics convened a workshop in Seoul on Thursday with the Eclipse Foundation and major global automakers to accelerate the development of open-source software for software-defined vehicles (SDVs), part of the company’s broader push to expand its automotive solutions business.
The event — the Eclipse SDV Community Meetup — brought together representatives from BMW, Hyundai Mobis and ETAS, a subsidiary of German supplier Robert Bosch. The gathering focused on building an open, shared ecosystem for SDV software at a time when carmakers worldwide are racing to shift from hardware-centered engineering to software-driven platforms.
“Leveraging our long-accumulated software capabilities and global partnerships, LG Electronics will take the lead in establishing an open-source SDV ecosystem and accelerating the transition,” said Eun Seok-hyun, the company’s executive vice president, in a statement.
Participants discussed strategies to reduce development time and costs by standardizing “non-differentiating software” — foundational systems such as operating platforms and telecommunications frameworks that are commonly used across the industry.
By relying on standardized base software, LG said, automakers can redirect resources toward developing technologies that shape the driving experience, including in-vehicle infotainment systems and advanced driver-assistance systems.
LG Electronics is also working with global automakers, including BMW and Mercedes-Benz, through the S-CORE project, an initiative aimed at unifying software standards to shorten product delivery cycles and enhance safety.
