SEOUL, Nov. 12 (Korea Bizwire)LG Electronics Inc. has announced plans to launch an automotive augmented reality (AR) software business after years of striving to grow its automotive electronics business into a future cash cow.

The South Korean tech giant said Thursday that it will kick-start operations to provide AR software solutions to automakers.

Thus far, it has been providing AR software in a package format by integrating it into infotainment components such as head up displays, dashboards and central information displays.

The company decided to launch an automotive AR software business in earnest on the basis of expectations that automakers will gradually expand the practice of outsourcing only software.

LG’s AR software solution will provide a real time connection with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), cameras, GPS and navigation systems.

Based on the data acquired through this connection, the solution will provide information on driving speeds, routes and pedestrians and surrounding vehicles in a graphic image format.

LG plans to include software development kits, simulation tools and user interface production tools in the AR software solution aimed at making it more convenient for carmakers to update the software.
