WONJU, June 8 (Korea Bizwire) — Endangered wild plants will be introduced to mountainous areas in Gangwon Province that have been devastated by limestone mining.
The Wonju Regional Environmental Office said Tuesday that a program to introduce endangered wild plants to restore the ecological system of the limestone mining development area will be held again this year.
The planting area is Mt. Jabyeong in Gangneung, one axis of the Baekdudaegan mountain range. This mountain has been severely devastated by limestone mining.
The flora that will be planted in the area includes second-grade endangered plants such as the Siberian lily, Astilboides tabularis, and Lychnis wilfordii that can grow well in limestone areas.
Limestone mining areas have alkali soils where plants cannot grow well. Accordingly, ecological restoration takes place slowly.
There is also the issue of soil erosion before trees and plants fully mature.
The Wonju Regional Environmental Office has strived to prevent soil erosion through the rapid rooting of plants, as well as to restore the ecological system of the mining area.
