SEOUL, April 16 (Korea Bizwire) — As more and more people are spending time at home in the aftermath of the new coronavirus outbreak, sales of products related to activities that can be done at home, such as cooking and brewing coffee, are increasing.
SSG.Com, the online shopping unit of retail conglomerate Shinsegae, analyzed sales data from Feb. 1 to 12 and found that sales of products related to “hometainment” increased by 100 percent compared to the previous two months.
Hometainment is a compound word of “home” and “entertainment.”
Sales of products that allow children to make snacks using dough rose 150 percent, while sales of baking mixes for pancakes, cookies and brownies rose 152 percent.
Furthermore, coffee-related appliances such as espresso machines, coffee makers and coffee bean grinders also gained popularity, with sales rising 74.5 percent and capsule-type coffee rising 25 percent.
Meanwhile, sales of “home gardening” products or related products, which allow people to grow plants directly on their veranda also rose by 147.6 percent.
In addition, home interior-related sales rose more than 40 percent, while home training-related sales rose 35 percent.
