SEOUL, Aug. 17 (Korea Bizwire) – A record number of TV series will compete in the annual Seoul International Drama Awards (SDA), the organizer said Thursday, despite a drop in participation from Chinese TV shows as Seoul and Beijing are locked in a diplomatic feud over an American missile defense system.

At a press briefing in Seoul, the organizing committee of the 12th SDA said that 266 dramas from 55 countries will compete in the five categories — best program, director, screenwriter, actor and actress.

For TV programs, there are four subsections: TV movies, miniseries, serial dramas and comedies. The Golden Bird Prize and the Silver Bird Prize will be given to the winners of each section, while the Grand Prize will be awarded to the best program among all nominees.

The German drama “Redemption Road” is nominated both for the best TV movie and best screenwriter. For the miniseries category, another German show, “Charite,” and the American TV series “This is US” are among the nine shows to compete.

The Korean show “Strong Woman Do Bong-soon” on cable channel JTBC, starring actress Park Bo-young and Park Hyung-sik, is up for two awards — the best miniseries and the best actress.

“This is US” creator Dan Fogelman and Song Jae-jung who wrote “W” will compete for the best director.

The awards ceremony, organized by the Korean Broadcasters Association, is slated for 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 7. It will be a live broadcast on KBS 2TV.
