SEOUL, March 23 (Korea Bizwire)South Korean researchers has developed an artificial lung modeled after the human lung with complex structures for use in experiments.

A research team from the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) announced on Monday that it had succeeded in developing an artificial lung model through 3-D printing.

Thus far, it has been difficult to develop artificial lungs for experimental use since the alveolar membrane is very thin and has a complicated structure.

The research team developed the three-dimensional lung model, including various types of alveolar cells, by using ‘drop on demand’-based high precision inkjet bio printing.

This method of bio printing applies very fine drops of ink precisely on the wanted position by adjusting the pressure applied to the cartridge.

The new model boasts a higher level of similarity with human lungs compared not only with two-dimensional cell cultured models but also with three-dimensional non-structured models that are cultured by mixing alveolar cells with hydrogels.
