SEOUL, Sept. 22 (Korea Bizwire) – South Korea and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) agreed on a visa-waiver program that will allow people to travel to each other’s country without a visa for up to three months, the foreign ministry said Thursday.

A memorandum of understanding on the visa waiver was signed at a meeting held on Wednesday (local time) between South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and his UAE counterpart Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, according to the ministry.

Under the program that goes into effect immediately, people of the two countries can travel to one another’s country without a visa for a maximum of 90 days.

During the bilateral meeting, both also discussed North Korea’s nuclear threat, with the UAE foreign minister quoted as expressing “extreme” shock from the latest and fifth nuclear test conducted by the North on Sept. 9.

He confirmed that the UAE will actively cooperate in implementing the U.N. Security Council’s resolutions aimed at tackling the nuclear issue, the ministry said.

Yun also held a meeting with his counterpart of Chad, with the African country’s top diplomat expressing support for global efforts aimed at weaning the North away from nuclear weapons, the ministry said. Both agreed discuss the issue again in a South Korea-Africa forum to be held in December in Ethiopia, it added.
