SEOUL, April 28 (Korea Bizwire) — SSG.com, the online shopping unit of retail conglomerate Shinsegae, announced Monday that it will start using ice packs containing eco-friendly microorganisms to help the environment.
The contents of the new ice packs, when disposed of through a drain, can cleanse wastewater or be used as a nutritional supplement for plants at home, the company explained.
Previously, the company had been using ice packs containing pure water without any other chemical substances, lauded for its eco-friendly qualities.
The company then decided to take another step forward by creating a cold insulation material that uses a photosynthetic microorganism known as PSB.
“At least 20,000 ice packs are used every day for early morning deliveries,” the company said.
“With the introduction of the new ice pack, we aim to achieve our social responsibility of offering sustainable, eco-friendly services and reducing the use of disposable products.”
