GWANGJU, South Korea, July 11 (Korea Bizwire) – South Korea captured the gold medal in women’s doubles tennis at the Universiade on Saturday.
Lee So-ra and Han Na-lae defeated Hsu Chieh-Yu and Lee Ya-Hsuan of Chinese Taipei 2-0 (6-4, 6-4) at Yeomju Indoor Tennis Court. They are the first South Korean women’s doubles team to win the Universiade gold since 1991.
Their match was moved indoors after a rain delay of about two hours.
The South Koreans broke Hsu and Lee twice early to lead 4-1. Hsu and Lee quickly returned the favor, breaking the South Koreans twice to draw even at 4-4.
Led by Lee So-ra’s strong forehand, South Korea broke Chinese Taipei once again, and Lee helped close out the set at 6-4 with strong serves.
South Korea broke Chinese Taipei to open the second set and built a comfortable 5-1 lead. Hsu and Lee refused to back down, however, breaking the South Koreans twice to cut the deficit to 5-4.
With Lee So-ra serving for the gold medal, the South Koreans went up 40-15 and Lee closed out the match with a forehand winner.
