SEOUL, Oct. 13 (Korea Bizwire)S-Oil Corp., South Korea’s No. 3 refiner, said Tuesday that it will take part in a large-scale clean hydrogen project to establish a domestic hydrogen ecosystem.

In collaboration with Saudi Aramco, the company will supply blue ammonia produced in Saudi Arabia to the domestic market. Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil company, is currently the largest shareholder of S-Oil.

Blue ammonia refers to ammonia that is produced with the carbon emission captured and stored.

It addition, S-Oil will supply clean hydrogen and ammonia mixed firing fuel to new partner Samsung C&T Corp., the construction unit of Samsung Group, and a domestic power company.

The refiner recently revealed its participation in a clean hydrogen project consortium that includes Samsung C&T and the Korea Southern Power Co.

It also plans to secure large-scale hydrogen demand on its own. It plans to convert existing plant fuel to hydrogen fuel and inject clean hydrogen into the production process such as heavy oil cracking and desulfurization.

Early this year, S-Oil acquired a 21 percent stake in a fuel cell developer Fuel Cell Innovations (FCI) to establish a strategic cooperative relationship to enter the hydrogen industry.
